A little more info
The Loughcrew Cairns, also known as the Hills of Loughcrew or Sliabh na Caillí in Irish, are a collection of ancient burial tombs located in County Meath, Ireland. The site is situated on a group of hills that rise above the surrounding countryside and offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
The cairns date back to the Neolithic period, which began around 4000 BCE and lasted until around 2500 BCE. They are estimated to have been built around 3300 BCE, making them around 5000 years old. The tombs were constructed by early farmers who lived in the area and who had developed a sophisticated culture based on agriculture, animal husbandry, and trade.
The Loughcrew Cairns consist of about 30 passage tombs, which are similar in design to the more famous Newgrange and Knowth sites located nearby. These tombs were used for communal burial and are characterized by a long, narrow passage leading to a central chamber where the remains of the deceased were placed. The tombs were often used for multiple burials over time, and some of them contain elaborate carvings and inscriptions.
The site was rediscovered in the 17th century, and over the years, it has been subject to looting, vandalism, and neglect. However, in recent years, efforts have been made to preserve and protect the site, and it is now a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the cairns and take in the stunning views from the top of the hills.
The Loughcrew Cairns are a fascinating testament to the rich cultural heritage of Ireland's ancient peoples and offer a unique insight into the beliefs, practices, and traditions of these early societies.
