According to a rumor from DigiTimes, Apple is going to raise the price of the forthcoming iPhone 13 series to compensate for increasing chip production costs from its top chip supplier TSMC.
According to the source, TSMC intends to raise chip production costs, affecting a number of clients, including Apple. For its sophisticated and mature process technologies, TSMC is reportedly planning to boost costs by up to 20%. The new regulations are set to take effect in January.
Customers have reportedly been advised of price increases of up to 20% for TSMC's advanced and mature process technologies, with the increased rates slated to take effect in January 2022. The price increases will also apply to orders that will be sent beginning in December.
Quotes for TSMC's sophisticated sub-7nm process technologies would jump by 3-10%, according to the sources. According to the sources, Apple, TSMC's largest customer, will see a 3-5 percent pricing increase, with its orders accounting for roughly 20% of the foundry's overall wafer sales.
To compensate for rising costs, Apple is allegedly considering raising the prices of the next iPhone 13 series to offset the impact of increased costs on profits.
This year, Apple is planning significant upgrades to the iPhone 13, including capabilities tailored to professional photographers and videographers. Apple is believed to be adding support for ProRes for videos and portrait mode videos to the higher-end models of the forthcoming lineup. Both of these features might be used by Apple to justify a price hike on its most expensive iPhones.
