China Miner, developed by Ian Gray and published by Interceptor Software in 1984, is a brutal but addictive single-screen platformer on the Commodore 64. In this game you play as Wally, the only person who knows the location of the Jade Mines of the Pong Dynasty in China. Across 30 screens, your goal is to collect a set of required objects (such as a pickaxe, candle, lantern, jade vase) before grabbing a key that opens the exit to the next stage.

Gameplay mechanics include avoiding creatures, lasers, moving platforms, and disintegrating platforms, with falling from heights also costing lives. If you touch an enemy, you lose one of your lives (you start with five), get sent back to the start of that screen, and all the collectible objects reset.

Notable features are its high difficulty (very unforgiving jumps, spikes etc.), fixed/flick-screen platform levels (no scrolling), and solid Commodore 64 presentation: the graphics are typical of early ’80s C64 (colorful but limited), controls somewhat tricky, and the music by Chris Cox adds atmosphere.

Despite (or because of) its punishing nature, China Miner has earned a place among retro gaming fans who enjoy titles that demand precision, memorization, and perseverance. It’s often remembered for being frustratingly difficult, but also rewarding for those who master its patterns.
