For routine cataract cases, I can perform just one phaco chop to split the nucleus into two halves and then then emulsify each hemi-nucleus. One chop is all it takes because of the 5 mm diameter of the capsulorhexis and the average 2-3+ nuclear sclerosis of my routine patients. In addition, I employ a special surgical maneuver where, after splitting the nucleus into two halves, I use the chopper to pull one half away to create additional space so that the phaco probe can bring the other half out of the capsular bag.
