When we as Christians look at our salvation as a transaction instead of the beginning of a lifetime commitment to a relationship with Jesus Christ and His Body, we will not last long in the local church. Transactions are typically done and finished. Relationships are ongoing, ever-changing, and growing.

A transactional mindset will tend to view our salvation as something that we do by raising our hand or walking an aisle, making a “personal decision” (transaction) to be saved. Then having sealed the deal with a public profession of faith we mark ourselves as “good.” Consequently, commitment to a local church and discipleship become optional because what is the point of adding something to my busy life, especially if it is messy, difficult, and confrontational if I am already “going to heaven.”

If you are looking for a hobby, the church is a horrible idea. But if you are willing to be involved in a committed relationship with God, His church, and His people then Jesus has made a way through a supernatural transaction, to be in a relationship with you that puts you into a new spiritual family called the church. Your commitment to those relationships indicates your understanding of God’s purposes for your life.
