On the morning of August 25, 2024, I set out from my hotel in Eastham and once again visited the Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in search of bird species. That day, I saw many snowy egrets (scientific name: Egretta thula) foraging on the mudflats after the tide had receded. The morning sunlight provided perfect conditions for bird photography. The snowy egret resembles the little egret found in Eurasia (scientific name: Egretta garzetta), but their ranges do not overlap much, so I can almost be certain that the small white heron species I saw on the East Coast of the U.S. is the snowy egret. A year ago, I had added these snowy egrets to my life list here, and they soon migrated south. As spring came around again, they reappeared in flocks along the Cape Cod coastal wetlands. Now, as August comes to a close, summer 2024 is drawing to an end, and the quiet days of Cape Cod are about to begin again.
