Red Cherry Shrimp VS Amano Shrimp 🦐 Which Is Right For You?

In this video, I compare the Red Cherry Shrimp and Amano Shrimp, two popular species of dwarf shrimp in the aquarium hobby. I'll cover their appearance & characteristics, tank setup, water parameters, diet, breeding, tank mates, and help you decide which is best for your aquarium.

Appearance & Characteristics: Red Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina Davidi) are small, colorful, and popular among beginners. They come in various red shades, with grading from cherry to painted fire red. The redder, the better.

Amano Shrimp (Caridina Multidentata) are larger and originated in Japan. They're known for their algae-eating capabilities and have a translucent light grey appearance with dots and dashes.

Tank & Water Parameters: Red Cherry Shrimp and Amano Shrimp share similar tank requirements and water parameters. Consider a planted tank for biofilm and oxygen production. Use sponge filters or hang-on-back filters, and ensure proper acclimation.

Diet & Feeding: Both are detritivores, but Amano Shrimp excel at algae eating. Quality foods are essential, including powdered, pellet, and frozen foods, along with blanched vegetables. Feed once or twice a week to avoid overfeeding.

Breeding: Breeding Red Cherry Shrimp is relatively easy with proper ratios and stable conditions. Amano Shrimp breeding is challenging due to their need for brackish water. Provide shelter and hiding spots for baby shrimp.

Tank Mates: Both species can coexist and are compatible with various species of fish. Snails and Otocinclus Catfish can also be suitable tank mates. Avoid aggressive fish like Oscars and Cichlids.

Choose shrimp based on your preferences and tank requirements. Red Cherry Shrimp are beginner-friendly and great for breeding, while Amano Shrimp excel at algae control. Both can enhance your aquarium. Consider factors like tank size, compatibility, and budget when making your choice.
