Five years ago Jakes gave his account of his experience working as a mental health advocate in South East London. Now five years later has his opinion changed at all ? From his account it has not. The longer he works in the system it consolidates what he thought originally and that is that things need to change. If you are having to spend time in a hospital and if you have been diagnosed with a mental health issue what can happen to you can feel more abusive than therapeutic. When a system forces people to take medication with unpleasant side-effects it can feel too coercive particularly when patients are not listened to and are treated as if they don't know what is good for them.
