'기억의 터' 약 2천명 시민 발걸음...1주년 기념행사
Ceremonies and celebrations were held this weekend to mark one year since a memorial was built to remember the so-called "comfort women" who were sexually enslaved by the Japanese military during World War Two.
The memorial was set up in August last year at Namsan Mountain in central Seoul, the site of the former residence of the Japanese governor-general when Korea was under Japanese colonial rule.
Lee Jeong-yeon reports. "Yellow butterflies of peace, soar away " With these words, a celebration marking the first anniversary of the comfort women memorial took off in the heart of Seoul.
The guests of honor were two of the remaining 37 comfort women victims who are still alive today, Gil Won-Ok and Kim Bok-dong. Also in attendance were “People That Remember," a group comprised of citizens of all ages. They came together to acknowledge... that the comfort women issue represents a historical injustice that should never be forgotten.
Despite the highly emotive nature of the issue, the event was light, filled with booths offering activities like puzzle-solving, face-painting, piling 'stones of hope,' and even making your own comfort women statue.

“I’m very thankful that the women were able to endure through their painful past. And I think this event makes it easier for us to learn about what happened in an interesting way."

On August 29th of last year, this 'Site of recollection' memorial was founded to honor the Korean victims of Japan’s sexual slavery during the dark 35-year colonial period.

August 29th was chosen as it marks the day Korea lost its sovereignty to Japan in 1910.

This memorial sculpture is inscribed with the famous quote, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." It serves as a timely reminder that we cannot and should not forget about this significant part of Korean history.

"I hope young people take the lead in resolving this issue. We must ensure there’s no more war. If there’s war again, history could repeat itself."

The organizers hope the event will remind citizens that the comfort women issue is not a problem consigned to the past, but is still on-going, and that the generations to come will keep it in their hearts… so it can be resolved once and for all.
