In the first of April 2014, two Dutch students, Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon, were volunteering in Boquete, Panama. They set off on a popular hiking trail called El Pianista and vanished without a trace. Their disappearance sparked a massive search effort that garnered international attention.
10 weeks later, a local woman found a blue Lycra backpack near a riverbank. This discovery offered a chilling clue but no answers. Inside the backpack were various items, including two neatly folded bras, the girls' mobile phones, and a digital camera. The phones showed that in the first days of their hike, a distressed attempt was made to call emergency services several times. Only one call connected, but it was abruptly cut off.
The digital camera contained photos taken on the first of April, presumably during their hike. The photos depicted both girls seemingly happy and enjoying their time. However, the mystery deepened when the camera revealed a further 90 photos taken at night, between 1 am and 4 am, a full 7 days after their disappearance. These night-time photos were disturbing - blurry and showing dense foliage with strange lights.
Two months after the backpack was found, the search team made a grim discovery: a pelvic bone, later confirmed to belong to Kris. Shortly after, a boot containing Lisanne's foot was found near the riverbank. This sparked further searches which eventually uncovered 33 more bones scattered around the area.
Despite these tragic finds, the cause of Kris and Lisanne's deaths and the events that transpired during their disappearance remain a disturbing mystery. The unanswered questions include:
Who or what caused them to take the night-time photos?
How did their remains become scattered over such a large area?
Why were their bras neatly folded in the backpack?
The official investigation by Panamanian authorities concluded it was likely an accident, with the girls falling from a cliff and succumbing to the elements. However, many unanswered questions and the strange details surrounding the case have led to much speculation and online sleuthing, with theories ranging from foul play to animal attacks.
The unresolved deaths of Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon remain a chilling reminder of the dangers that can lurk even in popular tourist destinations. The case continues to baffle investigators and true-crime enthusiasts alike.
