Bahlsen GmbH & Co. KG was awarded the BGN Prevention Prize in 2022. This prestigious award recognizes the company's outstanding efforts in the field of prevention and occupational safety. Bahlsen's innovative approach to addressing hazardous tasks and implementing effective solutions, such as the use of the dry steam cleaning device for conveyor belt cleaning, played a significant role in earning them this recognition. The BGN Prevention Prize acknowledges and promotes exemplary practices in preventing accidents and promoting a safe working environment.


The biscuit and sweet pastry manufacturer Bahlsen (in Germany) continues to impress with new ideas for occupational safety and health protection. At their Varel site, they found a clever solution for a hazardous task. Previously, the long product conveyors had to be manually cleaned and disinfected, removing chocolate residues and similar substances. This task often involved working in ergonomically unfavourable conditions, with risks of falls or accidents for the employees. Automated cleaning systems did not provide satisfactory results.

Instead, they now use Blue Evolution dry steam cleaning machines (by Beam) with a suction head, which is a component of a conventional floor cleaning device. This modified device can be easily attached to conveyors of different sizes, even in curved areas, and can be used during ongoing production. The process involves using 180-degree hot steam, which is highly effective in cleaning and disinfection. It eliminates the need for hazardous substances and represents a significant step in prevention, particularly because it eliminates the risky task of working with ladders and steps.
