Building the 5x9 American Flyer S gauge layout time lapse 2016

This video features the construction of my 5x9 S gauge over under figure eight layout. I combined short video segments made as I built the layout and scenery in 2016.

I had a track plan that is nearly the same as the layout my family had when I was growing up. My dad built it on a 5x9 plywood top. My mother constructed a paper mache tunnel over chicken wire and wood framing. Our layout used a graduated trestle set for the risers. The sidings were in a different location than my layout but the main line is the same.

I had not had an S gauge layout since fall of 1996. Over the years I kept collecting black rail 1946 track and gray rubber roadbed. I thought they would look good together. I finally had enough of both to make the layout and some space in the garage for it.

I had some left over 1/4" plywood and a lot of styrofoam from some home projects. I worked with those on the floor of our family room to get the basics down. Then I purchased a used ping pong table and set it up in the garage. I used a paint drop cloth as a table cover and went to work.

I knew this was a temporary location for the layout so I shaped all the landscape in sections so they could be removed and relocated when needed.

After all the styrofoam was cut and shaped I sealed it with brush on Mod Podge. After that was cured I painted the pieces with textured spray paints from the hobby store and added some scenic grass into the wet paints.

The layout remained like this until we made the move to our current home in 2017. It is still on the ping pong table sections and drop cloth. Those are on top of the larger table framework that you see now.

Thank you for watching.
