Pacoima is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the northern San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles. Its name originates from the Fernandeño language and means "the entrance. It was given this name due to the large streams of water which flowed through the area down from the mountain canyons.
Notable people from Pacoima include California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, musician Ritchie Valens, and muralists Judy Baca (creator of the Great Wall of Los Angeles), Levi Ponce, and Danny Trejo.
