Last thought from Tariq: One piece of advice to the 16 year old, really: get involved in a formal research lab ASAP. Research groups are much more willing to take young high school students now than they were in my day. I've heard of enthusiastic high schoolers doing amazing work. Also, be safe and responsible: there's nothing in an amateur lab that's worth life, limb, or freedom.
