A rare narrow necked vase or bottle, I don’t make many of these, mainly as I’m never quite sure whether they’re an object I like or not. Good for a flower or two, or a branch or a stem, they’re tricky objects to throw not so much due to physical act of pulling up the cylinder and fastening the shape, it’s getting the proportions right, the angles, the planes, the width and height of the neck, and so on, that’s the real challenge.

Beyond that I just make sure to properly centre my clay, which begins with a good spiral wedge but continues on the wheel in the way of coning the relatively firm stoneware up and down a number of times—this makes a huge difference. Admittedly, sometimes I don’t do this, say with mugs or bowls, normally made with really wet clay, they can be centred roughly and brought back to being on centre as the walls are lifted up. In fact, I don’t really mind if these shapes have a subtle undulation as you’re never going to notice it anyway once the wheel has stopped spinning.

Yet, with a shape such as this, a slight bit of movement in the walls can lead to the shoulder portion and neck undulation and the entire vessel leaning to one side as it dries, which isn’t what I want, so the centring is fastidious to say the least.
