In my first year studying Sociology at the University of Calabar, one of the first names we were introduced to was Auguste Comte. Back then, it felt like one of those topics you just read to pass exams. With time, I understood why he mattered.

Auguste Comte is known as the father of sociology because he was the first to name and define the discipline. He believed that society could be studied scientifically, just like the natural sciences. To him, human behaviour was not random, it followed patterns that could be observed and explained.

Comte lived after the French Revolution, a period of serious social confusion. Religion and traditional authority were losing influence, and people were searching for a new way to organise society. Comte believed science was the answer. This idea is what we were taught as positivism in year one.

One of his major ideas was the law of the three stages. He explained that human thinking develops in stages, first the theological stage, where people explain life through gods, then the metaphysical stage, which relies on abstract ideas, and finally the positive stage, where knowledge is based on observation and evidence.

He also classified the sciences and placed sociology at the top. According to him, sociology would help society understand itself and guide social progress. He divided sociology into social statics, which focuses on social order, and social dynamics, which focuses on social change.

Not all of Comte’s ideas were perfect, and many were criticised. Still, his contribution to sociology is very important. Without him, the discipline might not exist in the way we know it today.

As UNICAL sociology students, this was one of the theories that laid the foundation for everything we studied after year one.
