The change in habits that occurs when someone accepts Jesus and alters their life is considered significant evidence of being 'born again.
Then why don't our habits change even after we believe in Jesus?
First, it is because we not only have a personal relationship with Jesus but also a union with Him.
We must repent and strive to live in unity as one body with Jesus.
In 3 John 1:2, the apostle John said, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
If we have been united as one body with Jesus and born again, it is impossible for our habits to remain unchanged.
So we need to examine whether we are on the right track in the process of being born again or not.
After encountering Jesus personally, it is natural for changes to occur both inwardly and outwardly.
In 2 Corinthians 13:5, the apostle Paul said, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test?”
Second, it is because we did not truly believe that our old self was crucified and died with Jesus.
In John 16:9, Jesus said, “in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me.”
We must daily believe that our old self has died in our hearts, and resist the temptation to return to old habits.
In 1 Corinthians 15:31, the apostle Paul said, “I die every day--I mean that, brothers--just as surely as I glory over you in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
If the old self is the self that lives alone without God,
then the new self is the self that is born again, becomes one with Jesus, and lives in unity with God.
So we must believe that it is impossible for us to live alone without God.
In Romans 6:5, the apostle Paul said, “If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.”
Third, it is because they did not decide to live for themselves anymore and only for Jesus.
The regenerate people of the early church decided not to live for themselves anymore, but to live only for Jesus.
In Romans 14:7-8, the apostle Paul said, “For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. If we live, we live to the Lord and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”
In Luke 9:61-62, the Bible said, “Still another said, 'I will follow you, Lord but first let me go back and say good-by to my family. Jesus replied, 'No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
