🐟 Pabda Fish Culture (Ompok pabda)

✅ Introduction

Pabda is a small indigenous catfish species.

Highly valued for its soft flesh, taste, and absence of intramuscular spines.

Naturally found in rivers, beels, and floodplains, but wild stock is declining, so farming is encouraged.

📍 Site and Pond Preparation

Ponds should be around 0.05–0.1 hectare in size and 1–1.5 m deep.

Clean and dry the pond bottom; apply lime (CaCO₃) at 250–500 kg/ha to control pathogens.

Fertilize with organic manure and urea/TSP to promote natural plankton growth.

🐠 Seed Stocking

Stock hatchery-produced fingerlings to ensure healthy and disease-free seeds.

Stocking density: typically 10,000–20,000 per hectare.

Fingerlings should be at least 5–8 cm in length.

🍃 Feeding

Pabda is carnivorous; feed with formulated pellet feed containing:

Protein: 30–35%

Fat: 6–8%


Feed daily at 3–5% of body weight, split into 2–3 meals.

Monitor water quality regularly (especially dissolved oxygen and ammonia).

Maintain good pond hygiene and control parasites or bacterial infections using approved aquaculture medicines.
