Welcome to a new episode of 99SecondsWith, featuring IDOS Director Prof. Dr Anna-Katharina Hornidge. Today, we dive into the key outcomes of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Learn more about the challenges, progress, and urgent actions needed as we look ahead to next year’s COP in Belém, Brazil.

The climate regime and the yearly Conferences of the Parties (COP) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) are important multilateral processes and meeting places for decision-makers. However, this year, we have seen that process being undermined by vested interests.

It will be crucial in preparation for next year’s COP in Belém, Brazil, to think about moving beyond the incremental processes typically achieved in these negotiations. To address the climate crisis effectively, we do not need billions in incremental funding, but trillions—and we need them very soon—for both mitigation and adaptation.

These trillions will not come from public funds alone. We must consider taxing windfall profits in the oil and gas industry, as well as imposing taxes on aviation and shipping. These efforts could be linked to G20 discussions on a global minimum tax for the ultra-wealthy.

We need to have these discussions by building on the UN climate processes, linking them to the G20 and G7 discussions, and preparing for next year's COP in Belém, Brazil.
