It’s plain to see that the Skytech M71 is different looking than your average mini or micro quadcopter. Is it a quad or a tri? Well…it has 4 propellers so it’s a quad right? Not so fast. Hmm, but it has only 3 arms so it’s a tricopter right? But it also has 4 motors so it’s a…. :)

Well…no matter what you call it, the M71 has the coolness factor of being different looking than many of the quadcopters on the market. I like that. I like the fact that it is different and I have something not many people have. As a matter of fact, this one would be a great gift for people that like to be different or maybe go against the grain. It can also be found under the Syma X51 brand.

Great looks aside; this is a simple straightforward copter that is especially good for those wanting something to fly around the house and outside on days that have little to no wind. You won’t find a camera on this one, but are cameras really necessary for the type of flying people do with these little dudes? Not really. In this case it would just add weight and make something made to be zippy and fun slower. I guess if you wanted to you could strap a camera from another mini quad to it and see if it will lift it lol. Maybe I’ll try that.

As you see in the unboxing, you get the controller, a bag with the usb charger, extra set of propellers, and two extra batteries (for a total of three), and the instruction manual is also included but I didn't show that in the video.

So where does the Skytech M71 shine? It’s just a cool little tricopter/quadcopter that has great basic features like two speeds and the ability to do flips. It also has a 6-axis gyro so it flies and handles like more expensive copters. The battery is 3.7v and 350mah so it has a respectable average flight time of around 6 minutes depending on how many flips you do and what speed you fly at. If you do a lot of that expect it to last more like 5 minutes or less. A BIG bonus feature is that this copter has a removable battery, so you can get extra batteries and increase your enjoyment being able to swap out a fresh one and keep flying. Many very small quadcopters these days come with batteries that are soldered to the main board, so you are limited to flying, then plugging the cable into the back of the quadcopter and waiting for it to charge. That's a great deal and gives you a lot of extra flight time! PLUS - you can connect your charger cable to the USB port on the controller and charge the copter batteries with the controller. That's a feature I haven't seen before.

I received the Skytech M71 in exchange for my honest opinions and review of it. With every quad there are positives and negatives, and I am pretty straightforward about any shortcomings. I’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars on Amazon purchases and like many people, base my purchases off of reading many reviews. My impression after flying the M71 a lot (see video) is that it is just as easy to fly as any other copter that doesn’t have GPS or altitude hold modes. A crucial thing to do is make sure you get it up in the air and trim it until it hovers more steadily. This is a great one to learn on. The pilot gets to learn to actually fly it, and be aware of throttle control and yaw and orientation. It’s a good one to have around to learn basic piloting skills without danger of hurting anyone. Does it handle differently than a traditional quadcopter? Maybe a little, but it flies great and feels a little more agile with the skinny front and stacked props. In second speed mode, the M71 has fairly aggressive pitch as you can see in the video; and with full pitch forward it takes off like a little rocket.

The altitude adjustment and yaw are quite sensitive, so if you fly the M71 after flying something boring and slow, it may take a few flights to get the hang of it.

The M71 has nice bright LED lights and I was really impressed with how visible they are. Very useful when you are able to see them clearly when binding the controller with the copter, and when calibrating. All in all this is a very fun little machine. The more I fly it the more I like it. It's tough too, as during the learning process, I put it down (crashed) multiple times. It keeps on runnin' like a champ!
