St Gregory of Spoleto was a holy priest and martyr of the early Church whose unwavering faith in Jesus Christ led him to death under the Roman persecutions of Emperor Maximian. Celebrated on December 24, his story is preserved in Butler’s Lives of the Saints.

This powerful account recounts how Gregory spent his life in fasting, prayer, and teaching the Law of God, boldly refusing to worship pagan gods even when threatened by the Roman general Flaccus. When commanded to sacrifice to idols, Gregory courageously proclaimed the one true God—the Creator of Heaven and Earth—and rejected friendship with emperors in exchange for loyalty to Christ.

For his confession of faith, St Gregory was beaten, tortured on the rack, and finally beheaded, sealing his witness with blood. His relics rest in a church bearing his name in Spoleto, and historical testimony records a miracle worked through his relics in the year 1037, affirming God’s glory through His martyr.
