Did you know you’re employing artisanal miners? The gold and gems in your jewelry and the cobalt in your electronics come from mines all over the world. Artisanal and small-scale miners are individuals who work in mines and processing areas as individuals to obtain minerals and gems. They are often called “informal” workers.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) comes with enormous health risks and environmental impacts. For example, artisanal gold mining involves the use of mercury, a highly toxic metal that ends up in aquatic ecosystems and in the fish you eat. Artisanal miners also face risks of mine collapse, occupational illnesses and injury, and violence.

Even though ASM is viewed as “illegal” by many governments, it is ultimately a poverty-driven activity. People often have to chose between this dangerous activity and feeding themselves and their families.

There are 100 million people around the world who depend on artisanal mining. It accounts for 20% of all gold and diamonds, 80% of all sapphires, and up to 75% of all cobalt.

Artisanal miners and communities impacted by artisanal mining should be supported by governments, NGOs, and consumers to improve working conditions and environmental health.
