Thank you. I am a resident of District 2. I would like to address conversations in our community about possible reductions to middle school drama and chorus programming, and why these programs are not extras, but essential supports for students during a critical stage of development.

I am speaking tonight as both a Framingham parent and a practicing school psychologist who works daily with middle and high school–aged students. Watching my daughter participate in chorus, drama, and band at Cameron Middle School has shown me what these programs provide — especially for students who may not otherwise have meaningful ways to connect or feel a sense of belonging.

For many children, these programs are where they find their people, their voice, and a reason to feel connected to school.

Middle school is a critical window for intervention. In my professional work, I see the effects of the adolescent mental health crisis every day. Students are increasingly retreating into screens and social media, and once they lose authentic, face-to-face connections, it becomes extraordinarily difficult to help them re-engage in the real world. Prevention matters, and it needs to happen early.

Drama and chorus are prevention in action. They require collaboration, emotional vulnerability, accountability, and sustained focus — the opposite of the digital world. These programs build confidence that carries into academics, peer relationships, and a willingness to take healthy risks.

I have seen this growth firsthand with my own child. I have watched Cameron Middle School’s performing arts programs in action, both on and off the stage. The environments our educators create foster connection and belonging for students who may not otherwise experience it. These programs are powerful protective factors at a time when students need them most.

Framingham Public Schools is widely known for its strong performing arts programs, with audiences coming from near and far to see student performances. That reputation is built over time, often beginning in the middle schools.
