I can’t move back to the United States. All my life I’ve been afraid to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. When I was 21, I even applied for a work and holiday visa in New Zealand and was granted the visa but I never moved because I was too afraid.

I promised myself that I wouldn’t hide in a dark cave after Maria’s passing. I promised myself that I’d push myself to meet people and try new things. I’d step outside my comfort zone and find joy while being alone.

After Maria passed, I considered moving to Iceland, the west coast of Norway, the south of Norway or Oslo. I wasn’t sure where, but all I knew was that I needed a break from Lillehammer.

Maria’s sister said something to me that always stuck, “You can make the move and try something new and if you don’t like it, you can always move back or do something else. But you’ll never know if you don’t try.” It was the best advice I needed during a difficult time in my life. It also helped me remember that life is now. Opportunities are now and every time I say no to an opportunity, I’m closing a door on something that could potentially be good.

It still blows my mind that I’m here in Norway and away from my family and friends back home. It’s been 2 years since I moved here and I still have little “holy crap this is my life” moments when I hop on the train, tram, or trolly around Oslo.

Maybe some of you can also relate to these moments and feelings in different situations in your life? They are little moments of joy that I hope I never take for granted.

So moving back to the US is not something I’ll never consider, but it’s not something I’m considering anytime soon.
