Top 5 Features of the Sennheiser HD490 Pro Plus
Hi, today we’ll be reviewing our favorite features of the Sennheiser HD490 Pro Plus, a new addition to Sennheiser’s ever growing family of iconic audio products.
Starting off with number one, The HD490 Pro Plus, not to be confused with the regular 490 PRO version comes with a bit more in the box. There is an addition of a premium carry case, which includes additional accessories like an extra mini XLR locking audio cable with a convertible 1/4 to 3.5mm jack, an additional pair of mixing ear cushions made of a denim material - more on that later, an extra head cushion for the stainless steel headband, and of course the headphones themselves.
Number 2, is comfort. Just from first impressions, the 490’s felt lightweight and comfortable on the head. The primary material is hard plastics, with a stainless steel adjustable headband. Overall, I do wish there were more premium materials at play here, but from a weight standpoint, I understood the material choice. Overall, in just day to day use working for long periods of time, I’m happy to say the 490’s were exceptionally comfortable, no questions asked. The lightweight body, premium ear cups, and padded headband brought it all together. For those who are worried about comfort while wearing glasses, I’m pleased to say the ear cushions have a passageway built in, to make glass-wearers at ease.
Number 3, is modularity. The 490’s have a well-thought out modular design, where the ear cushions and headband support cushion is detachable, and washable. The Pro Plus comes with two types of ear cushions, the producing cushion and the mixing cushion. The producing pads, are made of a velvety material which gives a more pronounced bass and I would say a warmer sound signature while the mixing pads are made of denim, and will give a balanced flatter sound, perfect for detailed mixing. The ear cushions are attached and detached through clips along the edge of the ear cup cavity. All you have to do is push down from left and right until you hear a satisfying click on both sides.
Number 4 - Now, let’s get into the sound quality. When I first wore the headphones, I was impressed by the detail and richness. After using the HD490’s for around a week, I’ve found that I’ve enjoyed the warm and richer bass-oriented sound of the producing pads. The overall sound of the headphones are what you would expect from Sennheiser’s top tier prosumer headphones. Genre to genre, the instruments are detailed, there’s a tight vocal clarity, and when playing back sound effects and dialogue in video editing, I was able to clearly distinguish each layer. I would personally say, the sound definitely leans towards having a rich, deep bass profile. Overall, I have no real complaints regarding the sound, and I think Sennheiser has done a great job of keeping their signature sound, while adding a refreshing update to entice audio engineers and prosumers alike.
Number 5, last but not least the HD490’s feature a locking mini-XLR cable. The table is inserted through the left or right input jack located on the bottom side of the ear cups. All you have to do is push the button located on the table head and insert. To detach, push the button again and it should release. Although this feature might polarize a few, I found that this cable locking system definitely kept me feeling secure when using the headphones. The cable also feels very high quality, and the locking click is reassuring.
