Slumber soaked, shiraz stained, snoring upon the shore after a night of raucous revelry, the God Dionysus lay snuggled up to his wine cask oblivious to the ship of pirates plotting his abduction as they sailed into the bay. ‘With those sinuous limbs and lusty lips he’d fetch us a fine load of gold at the slave market in Naxos,’ they muttered greedily. And without anymore deliberating crept to shore and smuggled him, unconscious, back to their boat.
Dionysus awoke, days later, with a sloshing in his head not part of his usual hangover. He opened his eyes to darkness. He felt around him. His hands encountered only boards, the boards of floors, corners, walls and ceilings and…more walls. Barely enough room to dance in! A dark space with the slap of waves sounding distantly free…
The God of Wine, of Dance, of Mystical Trance and Vision felt a ferment of fury brew in him. ‘These people, these pirates, seek to enslave me. But they know not who I am and I will break free!’
The boat lurched to the left with a sudden force, throwing the pirates prostrate above on the deck . A great thick thrusting vine burst through the boards of the boat and spiralled snake-like up and around the mast, its tendrils wrapping around the rigging and dangling about the deck bountiful clusters of grapes. A fluttering covering of ivy leaves sprawled over the billowing sails till soon the whole vessel became an arbour of untamed greenness floating upon the cresting waves. The padded paws of panther, leopard and golden-maned lion prowled about the prow snarling their sabre-sharp teeth in the noon day sun.
The pirates were so filled with fear at the full fecund force of Dionysus’ envisioning that they plunged themselves overboard to get away. But the God who had reclaimed his verdant, vigorous power took pity on them and turned them into dolphins that loyally swim beside his vessel to this day as he sails towards shores of his own pleasure’s choosing.
So wherever you are now, can you see a vine creeping up through the floor? Snaking under your windows? Sneaking through the locks on your doors? ‘Imaginative vision,’ he whispers, ‘will save you.'
