Why You Should Play Assassin's Creed Unity in 2024

Assassin’s Creed Unity has been out for almost seven years now. In that time, it has not changed too much, but it is still a game worth revisiting. Honestly, the game is also worth a preliminary playthrough for any fans of the Assassin’s Creed series that have not played it yet. While Unity does not reinvent the series, it is a stepping point for the whole Assassin’s Creed franchise's future.

Unity is layered with different aspects that set it apart from the other earlier and later games in the series. While Origins, Odyssey, and the most recent Assassin's Creed Valhalla have all taken broader approaches to the series, Unity built itself on the tight environments that were common at the time. While the game did receive some backlash at its release, Assassin’s Creed Unity is still full of reasons to play after so long.

The easiest justification for those fans that question whether or not Unity is a title worth visiting is the game’s price point. Having aged some, it has dropped down from the $60 that new releases saw for so long, and is at a much more manageable $30. For people that might find this price still too high for an older game, waiting for a sale is a great plan too, like Ubisoft's current sale for its Switch games. If it is ever seen for sale with a listing below $30, it is definitely worth the money. The game does not feature a ton of DLC either which means that the main story is worth getting into without concerns that another $40 will have to be spent for everything to feel complete.

The game’s multiplayer is rather unique in the series, and is a feature that would be great to see return to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. A campaign that incorporates a four-person co-op system is not something that had been seen in the franchise before, and it was a fun co-op experience. While it might not work well with current titles, it could be revisited if the franchise does return to densely inhabited environments with the next Assassin’s Creed release.

Assassin's Creed Unity saw a huge improvement post-launch. While its initial release was plagued with bugs and glitches, definitely comparable to the recent release of Cyberpunk 2077, many of the game's problems were fixed with updates. Technical issues were sanded down and buffed out to create a cleaner player experience. The game that remained was a visionary title for its time, and it is unfortunate that some of its features have not remained prominent in recent Assassin's Creed titles.
Furthermore, for those who prefer the Xbox platform, FPS Boost is a huge thing. AC Unity was one of those FPS Boost games; for those who want to make the most of it, FPS Boost makes it run at 60 FPS, really maximizing its beauty on a console.

Unity was one of those games that are way ahead of its time. The environment of the game alone makes it a title that could benefit from a re-release in order to take advantage of newer hardware. It tried to do a lot with what it had available, and this is at least partly why its initial release had so many technical issues. The likelihood of a remake might not be great, but it still looks incredible on consoles and PC, albeit not as graphically stunning as newer games.

A lot of games in the last decade have gotten into the habit of forging themselves a need for a companion app. While they can be useful, such as Destiny 2’s, others can impose artificial limits on what players can do. Unity’s app was much more the latter, and its removal improved the game tremendously. When it was in service it was necessary to access certain content, but it has since been retired and that content was made available to all players through an update to the game.
