Bannack, Montana is a ghost town that was once a thriving mining town and the capital of Montana

On July 28, 1862, gold was discovered at Grasshopper Creek, which led to the founding of Bannack.

The gold discovery sparked a massive gold rush, and by 1863, Bannack's population had grown to over 3,000.

Bannack served as the capital of Montana Territory for a short time in 1864.

Bannack was known for its notorious sheriff, road agent robberies, and Vigilante justice.

As the value of gold decreased, Bannack's population declined. The town's importance declined further when the gold fields of Alder Gulch and Last Chance Gulch became larger and longer lasting.

The last residents left Bannack in the 1940s. The town became a ghost town by the 1960s.
