I’m so excited—I just got my hands on a Babaco papaya (Vasconcellea × heilbornii or Carica pentagona) and I’m growing it for the very first time!
Also known as mountain papaya, this unique fruit tree is more cold-tolerant than the tropical papaya (Carica papaya), making it perfect for cooler climates. It’s a rare, small, fast-growing tree that produces stunning yellow-green fruits up to 30 cm long, with a delicious sweet-and-sour flavour.
Babaco is ideal for container growing—and if it gets too tall, you can simply prune it back. The plant will sprout new growth below the cut, making it easy to manage its size. During winter, I’ll be keeping it in a bright, frost-free spot around 5–10°C to protect it from the cold. Can’t wait to see how this exotic fruit tree grows! Curious myth: "Babaco is a fruit that never breeds" Because babaco is seedless and sterile, an old Ecuadorian saying describes it as “la fruta que nunca cría” (the fruit that never bears children), sometimes used metaphorically about things that won’t “multiply” or “spread.” Some older folks associate this trait with mystical or unlucky qualities if planted near homes—though others see it as a symbol of purity.
