The Jaguar is the next generation of low power CPU's from AMD, and has been chosen for both the Playstation 4 (formally Orbis) and the XBox 720 Durango.

The AMD Jaguar is a revision of sorts of the Bobcat and other devices from AMD, with a variety of improvements such as more effective power gating, the inclusion of various instruction sets such as SSE4. There has been a healthy improvement on the IPC (Instructions per clock) among other significant improvements on the chip.

The power requirements for the AMD Jaguar are lower, with higher performance for the energy drawn. THis made it a perfect candidate to be placed into the PS4 and XBox 720. The PS4 uses 2 'units' of 4, giving 8 cores total, each jaguar core capable of acting independently and with its own cache.

The CPU is a hybrid of X86 and 64 technology (custom by Sony) and has a slightly lower clock speed than the AMD usual Jaguar, this version clocking in 1.6ghz rather than the 1.9/2GHZ most seem to run at.

The performance of the chip will be impressive, although unlikely to rival desktop chips from either AMD themselves, or their main rival in the CPU markplace (Intel). The chip being X86 in origin means that it will be far easier to port games to and from PC to the PS4 and more to the point, make it easier for developers to get to grips with the technology at the heart of the playstation 4.

Many of the chips actual raw performance numbers aren't known yet, and so be on the look out for a follow up video which will go through all of it when the PS4 has a developer console (supposedly in March).
