As a teenager working as a court clerk in Moravia, Mucha was fired after he sketched caricatures of plaintiffs and defendants instead of taking notes, marking one of his first brushes with professional discipline.

At age 20, Mucha's job as a scenery painter in Vienna ended abruptly when the Ring Theater burned down in 1881, killing nearly 400 people; rather than return home, he traveled by train until his money ran out, landing in Mikulov where he began freelancing portraits.

Mucha's mother tied a pencil around his neck as a toddler so he could draw while crawling on the floor, fostering his prodigious talent before he could even walk, few of these early scribbles survive, except a carved monogram on a church pew in Ivančice.

In 1878, at just 18, Mucha applied to the Prague Academy of Fine Arts but was rejected outright, with examiners bluntly advising him to "choose another profession where you will be more useful."

Beyond his commercial work, Mucha delved into the occult, joining a Parisian Masonic Lodge and conducting séances, blending his spiritual quest for utopia with his artistic mysticism.

Mucha was the eldest of six siblings, all named starting with "A" (Alphonse, Anna, Anděla, and three half-sisters from his father's prior marriage), a quirky nod to his modest Moravian roots.

Upon arriving in Paris in 1887, Mucha immediately began photographing female models to create a personal catalog of poses and forms, which informed his iconic flowing figures long before digital tools existed.

For Czechoslovakia's 100 koruna banknote, Mucha modeled the allegorical figure Slavia after a portrait of Walter Crane's daughter, blending personal connections with national symbolism during his U.S. stay.

In March 1939, days after the Nazi occupation of Prague, Mucha was arrested by the Gestapo for his Freemason ties and "Judeophile" views; released due to frail health, he contracted pneumonia during questioning and died months later.
