As the story goes, Danford Balch was the first man legally hung in Oregon when things were done like that in the mid 19th century. He got drunk and shotgunned his disliked new son-in-law on the deck of the Stark Street Ferry. No longer a ferry. Dan was a 345 acre land settler in NW Portland. There is a modern day sign over Balch Creek and the Thurman St. Bridge in Portland, Oregon that tells the story of Danford Balch and his fate. Find out more at the Oregon Historical Society.
