Haji Ghulam Mohd Honored with IARI Farmers Innovative Award


Renowned progressive farmer Haji Ghulam Mohd from Kargil has been honored with the prestigious IARI Farmers Innovative Award for his exceptional contributions to agriculture. The award, conferred by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, recognizes his dedication to organic farming, conservation of apricot cultivars, and innovative agricultural practices in the region.

Haji Ghulam Mohd, an innovative farmer associated with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kargil-I, was recommended for this honor by the institute, which played a key role in his selection by IARI.

Known for his expertise in pruning, training, and grafting of apricot and apple trees, he has guided over 50 farmers in Ladakh, promoting sustainable and advanced farming techniques. With 1.2 hectares of irrigated farmland, he cultivates wheat, barley, alfalfa, apricot, apple, and vegetables, significantly contributing to food security and economic growth in the region.

In addition to his horticultural ventures, Haji Ghulam Mohd has successfully expanded into livestock and poultry farming, further enhancing rural livelihoods. His commitment to natural and organic farming techniques has earned widespread recognition, making him a role model for aspiring farmers.

Previously, he was honored as a Champion Farmer by SKUAST-K and secured 2nd position in medicinal plant cultivation by DIHAR. His expertise has also made him a sought-after resource person for various government training programs.

Expressing her joy over this achievement, Dr. Nassreen Fatima, Head of KVK Kargil-I, congratulated Haji Ghulam Mohd for bringing national recognition to KVK Kargil and the entire district. She also extended her gratitude to ICAR-IARI for considering their recommendation and for encouraging local farmers through such prestigious awards.

The farming community in Ladakh has hailed this achievement as a major motivation to adopt innovative and sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring long-term growth and self-sufficiency in the region.
