Plot Summary
Notorious gangster "Thunderbolt" Jim Lang (George Bancroft) is on the run for murder and robbery. His moll, Ritzy (Fay Wray), wants to go straight and leaves him for honest bank teller Bob Moran (Richard Arlen). Captured after a stray dog distracts him during a getaway, Thunderbolt lands on death row. When the innocent Bob is framed and placed in the adjacent cell (now engaged to Ritzy), Thunderbolt plots deadly revenge—but redemption, jealousy, and irony complicate his scheme. The film mixes tough underworld scenes with prison drama, featuring diegetic music (Harlem nightclub jazz, gospel hymns from off-screen prisoners) and eccentric touches like Thunderbolt's pet dog in his cell.
