New Zealand Great Walk | Hiking the Rakiura Track, Stewart Island

Feb 2020 - This video highlights our recent hike of our 4th New Zealand Great Walk - the Rakiura Track on Stewart Island. It shows track & campsite condition along with animals & overall beauty captured along the way.

Stewart Island (aka Rakiura) is an international dark sky sanctuary and didn't disappoint. It's also a kiwi haven, of which we heard many, but we failed to see any. Others lucky campers saw them along the track. From beaches to beech forest, this track was by far the easiest of the the New Zealand Great Walks we've completed to date.

We chose to stay in campsites instead of huts and experienced fantastic weather! The ferry ride from Bluff (South Island) to Oban (Stewart Island) was rather pricey driving the cost of the Great Walk to much higher levels than it could/should have been. Camps (of which there were two), were $6 NZD / person and the ferry was $318 NZD total.
