A ballistic missile fired by Houthi rebels hit the vicinity of Israel’s main international airport on Sunday morning, injuring four people after a rare failure of the country’s missile defence system.

Israel’s Arrow and American THAAD (terminal high altitude area defence) systems failed to intercept the missile, which was fired by the Iran-backed group that controls much of Yemen and landed near the terminal of Ben Gurion.

The airport was temporarily closed, with police warning people not to show up to the terminal.

The US and Israel’s air forces are investigating how the missile was able to land on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. Three others sent over the past few days were successfully intercepted.

The Houthis claimed responsibility, saying in a statement that they used a “hypersonic ballistic missile”. It marks the most successful launch for the rebel group in over a year, after they joined the war against Israel in what they say is a show of support for Palestinians in Gaza, launching surface-to-surface missiles into Israel and attacking ships along key waterways in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
