The sexual assault of a young woman on a New Delhi bus last December sparked widespread debate about the safety of women in India. The attack killed a 23-year-old aspiring physical therapist, and led to nationwide protests.

Then, one month ago, the rape of a 22-year-old photojournalist in Mumbai added fuel to the public discourse. The attack on the photographer also led to protests around the country, and it also broke the code of silence around sexual harassment and violence that female journalists face while doing their jobs.
