In this video, I’m using Jacquard Dorland’s Wax as a protective finish on a watercolor pencil drawing, and showing the process from start to finish.

I start by showing the product itself, then apply the wax directly over a completed watercolor pencil piece. Once the wax is on, I let it dry, then gently buff the surface to bring out the depth and finish. You can see how the colors deepen slightly and how the surface becomes more durable and unified.

After sealing the artwork, I use the finished piece to make a handmade card, which is a great example of how Dorland’s Wax can protect watercolor and mixed media work that will be handled or gifted.

Dorland’s Wax is a versatile cold wax medium made from pure wax and damar resin. It’s commonly used as a protective topcoat for watercolor, gouache, collage, and mixed media, and it won’t yellow over time. You can leave it with a soft matte look or buff it to a subtle sheen, depending on the effect you want.
