00:00 Introduction
The Perdomo 20th Century Sun Grown was reviewed using the Bespoke Unit Cigar Formula, a quantifiable review matrix. Furthermore, the cigars have been stored in a Boveda acrylic humidor with 69% Boveda packs for a period of three weeks to ensure that they were properly acclimated and ready to be evaluated.
01:14 Cigar Overview
This cigar was manufactured at the Perdomo factory in Esteli, also known as El Monstro. It features a Nicaraguan Sun Grown wrapper, which has been aged for 8 years as well as 10 months in bourbon whisky barrels. Its binder and filler consist of Jalapa, Condega and Esteli tobaccos.
02:03 Look & Feel
Interestingly, the Sun Grown has a box-pressed finish unlike the Connecticut cigar of the same range. Its mild mocha hue gives off the light with a slight reflection. The spring is a little soft but the overall roll is straight.
02:54 Prelight
Expect a good draw with excellent airflow. Its dry draw delivers leather, labdanum and ambergris. Overall, it's quite musky!
04:22 Tasting Notes
The first third reveals notes of nutmeg, rosewood, and yuzu. Meanwhile, the second third offers agarwood, coffee grounds, and oak. Finally, the last third continues to deliver oak and coffee grounds. Meanwhile, the agarwood has transitioned to black pepper.
It's an overall complex cigar with a velvety mouthfeel. It initially focuses on the exterior of the palate, but stimulation eventually moves towards the centre. Nevertheless, it's quite a dry cigar and requires something to accompany it. The finish is quite lingering, too.
08:51 Burn
The draw remains consistent and the cigar offers a cool smoke. There are some burning issues, which ultimately needed touching up. Similarly, the ash backbone seems to be a bit flaky.
09:18 Overall Experience
The cigar features the same style of band as the Connecticut blend. It's large and appears that it should be two bands. However, the red colour scheme is less loud and a little more subtle. It comes in a 5-cigar count presentation box with individual packaging for each cigar. Therefore, it's a great gift and suitable for special occasions. However, be sure that they are adept smokers given the body of the cigar, which is unsuitable for newcomers.
Typically, the cigar will cost around $9.25 each but purchasing a 24-count box will lower the individual price.
11:04 Pairings
Consider enjoying the cigar with a carpaccio dish or even very dark chocolate. Walnuts are also an excellent choice.
Otherwise, a fine-champagne cognac would be our first beverage choice. Espresso is often pleasant with a cigar, but we suggest an Americano or a long black to enjoy the coffee for longer.
If you're fond of wine, consider also a Californian pinot noir, which has a rich, full body. Meanwhile, a Burgundy pinot noir will be too fruit-forward.
