STORYLINE
High-performance athletes and Cuban officials preparing for the World Athletics Championships in the US expressed their concern on Friday about the delay in the delivery of visas by the US government.
14 athletes in different modalities have their classifications ready for the competition in the state Oregon to be held this July.
Cuban officials indicated that initially, they tried to apply for these permits in Spain, where they were given appointments for the next year.
Some athletes even returned to the island, where they finally submitted their applications on June 21.
To date, they have not received a response.
The US consular service in Cuba has been semi-paralysed since 2017 due to US sanctions against Cuba, forcing those interested in obtaining visas of various types to travel to third countries such as Guyana to apply from there.
The recent migratory wave of Cubans has also had repercussions on sports.
High-performance athletes, not only in baseball, take the opportunity of their trips abroad to leave the island.
The XVIII World Track and Field Championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon, from July 15-24, 2022.
It's organised by the World Athletics and the US Track and Field Federation.
Originally, the event was to be held in August 2021, but because the 2020 Olympic Games were postponed to the summer of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the championships had to be postponed by one year.
