After a complete makeover, the historic West Market in Tainan has finally reopened to the public, and it’s already proving to be a popular tourist destination. Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che hopes that its combination of historic architecture and modern amenities will appeal to visitors from around Taiwan and the world.

The century-old West Market in Tainan has undergone a complete renovation. Mayor Huang Wei-che, local representatives, celebrity Cathy Shyu, and others attended the reopening to witness this historic moment.

Today, I’m very glad to see the long-awaited reopening of the West Market finally come to fruition. I can see that many people can’t wait.

After 20 years of restoration work, the market and its surrounding areas have all been refurbished into a spacious and orderly shopping hub. It features 66 stalls for boutiques, shops, and fabric vendors, as well as 20 food stalls. Unlike other traditional markets, its youthful design is sure to attract a different clientele.

We turned this old building into a living historical site. After renovations and reopening, many new vendors have set up shop.

The city-designated historic site has long served as a public space for Tainan residents. Having witnessed a century of the city’s development, West Market has been reborn as both a historical and fashionable destination. Travelers from around Taiwan and the world are encouraged to come experience the charm of historic Tainan for themselves.
