The Roman Theater of Malaga are the archaeological remains of the theater of ancient Malacca and the main vestige preserved from the Roman presence in Malaga. It is located in the historic center of the city, at the foot of the hill of the Alcazaba. Work of the first years of the Empire, its design corresponds to a mixed construction that combines the use of the slope of the hill for the grandstand in the manner of the Greek theaters with an important construction where the rock is non-existent, creating the necessary space for the steps. It is a theater of medium dimensions that retains much of the cavea or grandstand, the orchestra richly decorated with large marble slabs, and the scaena, which today has reproduced its pavement with a wooden floor as the one that would have in its moment of use. The scenic apparatus would close to the bottom with an ornamental facade decorated with bays, columns and sculptures, of which several copies have been recovered. The Theater was discovered in 1951 in the course of some works for the realization of a landscaped space. At first the remains appeared identified with one of the doors of the wall. Shortly after it was seen that it was actually the Aditus Maximus of a theatrical building from Roman times. This building was continued below the modern building of Archives, Libraries and Museums, known as the House of Culture. After many years of research and debates, in the nineties of the twentieth century the decision was taken to tear down the house of culture, excavate in extension the entire site and then restore it and consolidate it for its value. At present it is an archaeological enclave whose ownership and management corresponds to the Junta de Andalucía. It is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, and its visit is articulated between an interpretation center that is located adjacent to the theater, and the site in question whose route is possible through wooden walkways. The Roman Theater of Malaga has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Artistic Monument, by Decree dated March 16, 1972. In the current urban planning it is cataloged with grade A, integral protection, by the General Plan of Urban Planning of Malaga.
