"What the women are hoping for, first of all, is to find out who, finally, is responsible for this. Secondly they want to receive compensation for damages to be able to take the necessary measures to regain control over their health. Many women in Latin America still have the implants, and find it very difficult to access medical services, to be able to get tests done, to see what state their implants are in - and having them removed is even more complicated - and so those are the objectives, to make sure their voices are heard - to find out who is responsible and to get compensation."

"It was as soon as I landed in South Africa, on exiting the plane, stretching, I felt a cracking, like you would as a long-distance runner, where I know people who have tendons which snap. For me it's like that in my breast, a strong pain and I felt really dreadful, suffering from real pain. Running 120, 150 kilometres you're used to pain, you can deal with it quite well. But I couldn't even lift myself up and I really suffered."

"Getting back to France, I asked for a scan urgently and they saw that the implant had ruptured. And I was in that state for a year, waiting for an operation, I lived with the pain."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of women who received faulty breast implants are gathering in the south of France for the fraud trial of five executives accused of using cheap industrial silicone to fill tens of thousands of implants around the world.
Jean-Claude Mas, who founded and ran implant-maker Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), is among those on trial beginning on Wednesday in the southern city of Marseille.
The now-defunct company had claimed exports to more than 60 countries and was one of the world's leading implant makers.
Officials say the implants are prone to rupture and leaking.
According to estimates by national authorities, over 42-thousand women in Britain received the implants, more than 30-thousand in France, 25-thousand in Brazil and 15-thousand in Colombia.
The implants were not sold in the United States.
Nathalie Lozano, one of the lawyers for the women who suffered from ruptured implants, said outside the courthouse in Marseilles on Tuesday that the women wanted to find out who "is responsible for this."
