Unglazed terracotta is porous by nature, which means that is loves water and air to flow through it. When buried in the soil, the property of soil moisture tension causes water to seep out through the pores off the clay pot ( Olla ) If the soil is dry. If the soil is moist the water stays in the clay pot.
Some studies claim up to 70% reduction in overhead watering needs because of this property. No water goes to waste, and the roots seek out only the water that they need!
