May 25, 2002 - Twenty minutes after taking off from Taipei, a China Airlines 747 suddenly disappears from the radar. A massive rescue mission is launched, but no survivors are found. All 225 people on board are killed.

Investigators study the scattered wreckage and much of the plane is now at the bottom of the sea. Investigators are able to rule out an explosion in the plane's fuel tank but discover a repair to the plane's skin that has been covered by a patch. When investigators remove the patch, they find extensive damage to the aircraft's fuselage, that was never properly fixed. The patch covered up a problem that grew steadily worse over thousands of takeoffs and landings until it destroyed the plane completely.
