Foreign Reserve #Currencies! Right now the US #dollar is a reserve asset of choice. But the story is not so simple. Over the last 120 years, currencies are risen and fallen.

The Deutschmark disappeared after its hyperinflationary disaster in the early 20s, and then emerged once again in the 50s.

#Pound #sterling, lost ground to the dollar. But this was not an instant post-war transition like we are told – there was a long drawnout power struggle between the two currencies. The great depression gave the US dollar thumping, but eventually the dollar prevailed after the Second World War.

There are other interesting things. Have you ever heard of the European Currency Unit? It was replaced by the #Euro. And, note the rise of the Chinese #renminbi

I created this infographic because surprisingly there is very little data that stretches back this far. Fortunately there are a handful of very dedicated economic historians who have tried to piece together how reserve currencies emerged.

What will be interesting is what this chart might look like in 50 years time. Will the Chinese #renminbi takeover? Or perhaps there will be no need for reserve currencies in a #cryptocurrency world.
