To celebrate the China Premiere of its ID.4 models, Volkswagen conducted a massive drone show in Shenzhen at the beginning of November. The choreography included the biggest ever 3D car shape, a 400 meters long Volkswagen ID.4 formed by drones in the Shenzhen sky. For the first time ever, formations included 3D cars with animated transitions that were filmed with a custom built First-Personal View drone, flying at speed through the 2000 big show drone formations. There are no computer animations in the released footage. It was captured live and what can be seen is real.

Production:
A fleet of 2,000 show drones was used for the show.
4500 square meter take-off area for the fleet of 2000 drones (just short of 1 soccer field).
Shot over 4 days, 2 flights per day (10 minutes each).
A total of 15 different 3D formations.
No animation or computer-generated 3D elements in the released footage.

Filming:
8 regular camera drones with a 4K resolution.
For the shots flying through the drone formations, a set of two FPV (First-Person View) drones with BMCC 6K cameras (Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera) was custom-built.

Dimensions:
Widest formation was 450 meters (globe).
Tallest was the VW logo (147 meters tall).
The ID.4 car had a scale of approximately 83:1 (drone formation was 83 times as big as the car). It measured 400 meters (length) x 161 meters (width) x 142 meters (height).

REV FPV custom built the FPV camera drones to allow for super close filming, sometimes going inside the formations.
