Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro said he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt while flying in a helicopter on Monday night. Speaking during a live-streamed Cabinet meeting, Petro described how fears of gunfire forced him to divert his helicopter and travel four hours over open sea before safely arriving at his destination. He also revealed that he ordered the retirement of a Police general accused of attempting to sabotage his February 3 meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. Petro has repeatedly warned of threats from criminal groups and drug-trafficking organisations since taking office in 2022. After heavy rains in Cordoba, Petro conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas.
