Castro Marim, The Medieval Jewel Of Portugal

In the picturesque Algarve region of Portugal, right next to the border with Spain, there's a hidden gem waiting to be discovered - Castro Marim.
In the Roman era it was known as Aesuris and its history dates back to 5000 BC, making it one of the oldest settlements in the country.

During the centuries, Castro Marim was a strategic port due to its location. Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs passed through here, leaving their mark on the town.

Situated on a hill overlooking the town, there's the majestic Castro Marim Castle. Dating back to the 13th century, this is one of the most important and well-preserved monuments of the Portuguese Middle Ages, offering scenic views of the surrounding areas.

Every year at the end of August there is a Medieval Days Festival held in the Castle that brings together musicians, archers, swordsmen, dancers, troupes, etc. There are sellers too: blacksmiths, textile crafters (weaving), herbs sellers, etc. and banquets take place under the mysterious lights of torches.

In front of the castle, on top of the opposite hill, sits another defensive structure, the Fort of San Sebastian. This star-shaped structure was built in 17th century to defend against pirate attacks, and now it serves as a museum where visitors can learn about the town's military history.

The defensive set of structures was complemented by the Ravelin Santo António, a 17th century military fortification, situated at the top of the hill known as the Zambujal Rock, to the east of the town of Castro Marim. Inside the ravelin walls are the chapel Capela de Santo António, a traditional mill and the local Interpretation Centre, which serves as a viewpoint overlooking the river Rio Guadiana and the Castro Marim Marshlands.

The town itself is a charming mix of traditional Portuguese architecture, winding cobblestone streets, and quaint cafes serving up delicious local cuisine.
