When creating food plots for whitetail deer, it is important to keep up maintenance. Here I use hinge cutting to fall trees on the south side of a plot to let light in.

This food plot has been in place for 8 years, but last year I noticed that in this location the plants were not growing as well. The problem is that trees added height over the years and were shading the food plot in fall. In this video I hinge cut trees on the south side of the plot to let light in. About 15 maple and black cherry trees are felled. Most of them were leaning to the south so it made it very easy to hinge cut. Hinge cutting is preferred over conventional cutting in this case because I want to allow deer to be able to move through the area.So I cut a bit higher to span a trail and keep the trees high enough for deer to pass under. In cases where the trees broke off, I will simply come through and cut openings to allow them to pass easily.
